Beyond the Diagnosis: A Holistic Approach to Supporting Children with Autism

Detoxification, gut health, and the endocannabinoid system.

For many families dealing with an autism diagnosis, conventional medicine offers limited answers. Medications ease symptoms but rarely address their root causes. However, a growing number of holistic therapists and parents are discovering that deep change is possible — and it begins not with prescriptions, but with understanding the body on a deeper level.

Many young patients, some as young as 6 years old, are prescribed psychotropic medications aimed at reducing difficult behaviours such as aggression, insomnia, self-harm, or withdrawal. Helpless parents, trusting their doctors, administer these medications without being aware of the consequences. They do not know that such an intervention does not solve the problem — it deepens it, preventing recovery. The chemical substances in medications shut down receptors in the brain rather than repairing them. As a result, the child becomes calmer, but also cognitively less capable.

The effective solution is to find the root cause — sometimes this can be an entire list of elements that together form the picture of an "autistic child." It is important to understand what autism means for my child and how I can help them be "autistic" while also being a healthy child.

In our understanding, autism is not a disease — it is a state of awareness. Unfortunately, in recent times this diagnosis has become very common. A doctor, seeing a child with so-called "autistic behaviour," places them in the same autism category. The child ends up on a waiting list for further intervention. Sometimes this wait lasts several years, causing the child to function increasingly poorly and eventually be referred to a psychiatrist who prescribes medication. Such medications degrade neuronal function, which is associated with irreversible neurological changes in the child's brain.

In our understanding, finding the cause of autism is key. We know that this may involve toxic burdens at the level of the physical body, but also emotional or spiritual burdens, most often passed down through generations. Early intervention is fundamental. The sooner changes are introduced, the greater the chance of rebuilding proper neural pathways in the young child's brain, and therefore a greater chance of recovery. Being autistic and healthy can be a wonderful experience for both the parent and the child.

Autism Through the Lens of Toxicity

The foundation of this approach is a core assumption: toxins are the primary cause of most chronic health problems. The goal of a therapist working with an autistic child is not to "cure" or "heal" autism; their role is to help the body remove toxic burdens that may be disrupting the proper functioning of the entire nervous system.

The most commonly identified toxins are heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and aluminium, which are identified as post-vaccination burdens or environmental pollutants. Importantly, accumulation often begins before birth — toxins present in the mother's body can pass to the developing child in the womb. Such toxic burden causes disruption to nerve signal transmission, making the child irritable, absent, tearful, unable to sleep — and sometimes even to eat. At an older age, the child may experience problems with learning, communication, forming relationships, and much more.

Using EAV testing, our therapists can detect not only the presence of toxins but also their precise location in the body. In children with autism, heavy metals or pathological proteins are often identified in specific areas of the brain, intestines, kidneys, liver, and elsewhere. This information forms the basis of a personalised detoxification protocol.

Part of such a protocol includes informational supplements by Marion Dr Jonas, as well as a range of other recommendations.

The Gut and Brain — A Connection That Cannot Be Ignored

Detoxification alone is often not enough. Children on the autism spectrum very frequently display leaky gut or a weakened gut microbiome — the rich ecosystem of beneficial bacteria that regulates immunity, digestion, and mood. When the microbiome is disrupted, the body's natural ability to eliminate toxins is diminished. With a leaky gut, toxins enter the bloodstream and travel with the blood to all tissues of the body. In children, these intestinal toxins also reach the brain, as young children have not yet developed a blood–brain barrier. A vicious cycle emerges: more toxins in the brain cause the nervous system to become increasingly dysregulated, which in turn worsens difficult behaviour.

From our experience, diet — or rather an appropriate nutritional approach — is absolutely essential. The menu should not include pro-inflammatory ingredients such as sugar, wheat flour, and in some cases other gluten- and pesticide-containing flours. We recommend that parents familiarise themselves with the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome). This is a therapeutic nutritional protocol that eliminates processed foods and focuses on healing the gut wall through bone broths, fermented products, and easily digestible nutrients. The testimony of many mothers has shown that dietary intervention combined with detoxification can support children in ways that conventional approaches often cannot.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System — The Third Pillar

The human body has a remarkable capacity for cellular regeneration. However, there are two exceptions: the heart and the nervous system. Nerve cells are exceptionally difficult to regenerate, meaning that damage to the nervous system can persist long after the toxic burden has been removed. This is precisely where cannabidiol oil (CBD) has emerged as a significant complementary tool. The key to understanding its role lies in a system most people have never learned about: the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Discovered by Israeli professor Raphael Mechoulam, the ECS exists in every human and most animals, and processes cannabinoids produced both naturally by the body and those derived from plants such as cannabis.

The ECS operates through a network of receptors distributed throughout the body. CB1 receptors are concentrated around the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found in the major organs. CBD and THC together appear to enable a form of cellular communication between these receptor networks — effectively restoring connections in the nervous system that may have been disrupted.

For this reason, commercially available CBD oil that is free of THC in accordance with regulations may be less effective than a carefully formulated preparation containing both cannabinoids in a therapeutic ratio.

A Story That Speaks for Itself

One of the cases discussed during a webinar concerned a non-verbal boy with a significant tendency towards self-harm. After approximately one year of using a CBD formulation, his mother reported that he had become noticeably more self-aware and more connected to the people around him. He began attending nursery school.

When CBD was discontinued for a month — due to pressure from the school, which misunderstood the legal status of the product — the child deteriorated rapidly and was referred to a psychiatrist who recommended medication. The mother, recognising what had brought about the change, returned to the CBD protocol. The pharmaceutical medication was discontinued, and the child returned to nursery school with clear improvements observed in speech and behaviour.

The Power of Combining Approaches

The most important message is simple: no single intervention is sufficient.

  • Detoxification removes toxic burdens and halts further damage to the nervous system
  • Gut healing restores immunity and repairs the gut–brain axis
  • CBD oil supports the nervous system's own capacity to repair and restore connections

When all three are combined, the effects appear to be significantly greater than the sum of their parts.

A Message for Parents

Your attention and focus should be directed towards causes, not symptoms. Detoxification at the cellular level is a path that offers hope — hope that your child, though autistic, can be healthy, happy, and fully realise their purpose on this earth.
